Employee Selection: How to Score the Best Employee Referrals

Here at The Resumator, we believe that employee referrals are fantastic, and it's not hard to guess the reason. Referrals make the employee selection process much easier by reducing the amount of sourcing and recruiting your HR department has to do. So how can you make sure you’re making the most out of this sourcing method?  Here are a few tips:

Source from within

When you make employee referrals a part of your employee selection process, you're essentially using the same sourcing techniques that you’d use in the real world. That, of course, begins with list making. Create a list of your standout employees and ask them to start recruiting from within their own social networks.

Provide incentives

Money makes the world go ‘round, as both Liza Minnelli and R. Kelly say, and there’s no better way to get your employees to start recruiting their friends than by offering them a cash reward if one is hired. This will increase the number of referrals you get, giving you a veritable sourcing smorgasbord of qualified candidates from which to choose.

Use social media

Your employee’s ditzy BFF or burnout older brother may not have the professional qualifications or personality you’re looking for in a new hire, but if you encourage your employees to post about job openings on Facebook or Twitter, you’ll extend your reach and get access to all of that person's friends. If you have 10 employees and each has 300 Facebook friends, that's 3,000 people who otherwise wouldn't have been on your radar. Social recruiting is your friend.

Do some quality control

As we mentioned, offering people some cold, hard cash is a great way to get them into the idea of recruiting for your company. But you don’t want them to refer any old bum just so they can get a little extra money. To prevent this, it would be wise to add a stipulation to the deal – for example, you could put a hold on the referral bonus until the new hire has successfully completed a certain number of days at your company. Don’t wait too long to issue the reward, as it can make the incentive less appealing (and employee selection a whole lot harder).
